N-Vision's former community services manager Judith Harrison was very impressed by these eye test reminders on the pumps at Kendal - and so am I.
It's a local initiative - the Kendal Sainsbury's having an onsite branch of the franchise Specsavers - but it's a great way of getting the message across.
So much sight loss is avoidable and having regular eye tests as a routine rather than a reaction to vision issues is a great way of heading off problems or having them dealt with far sooner. Earlier intervention is crucial in many cases.
This is also very good marketing and product placement for Specsavers - because those messages are unmissable while filling up at the pumps.
I'd love to see more campaigns like this - particularly with Eye Health Week coming up fast next month.
Last year Specsavers nationally joined forces with the RNIB for the brilliant #dontlosethepicture campaign - and Hairy Biker Dave Myers backed the North West campaign after a routine eye test detected glaucoma. As Dave said at the time: "It’s so hard to be able to imagine doing all the things I love to do if I couldn’t see, whether it’s riding my bike, reading an autocue or preparing ingredients."
Locally, as freelance PR/publicist at N-Vision the trailblazing (and highly topical work right now) of orthoptists based at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was highlighted in an article which has since reached 13669 people (11k more with an allied article) across the region: www.entirelynorthwest.co.uk/…/mummy-my-eyes-aren-39… .
It featured the amazing work of the team - one of the nicest and most committed work families I've ever encountered - and the results of eye screening for four and five year olds; we also expressed the hope this would be rolled out across the country. It really does make sense to do so.
